West Writer’s Club

Footscray Community Arts Centre’s West Writers Group is a collective of writers from diverse backgrounds who currently live, work or have other established links to Melbourne’s west.

It is a collective that amplifies the stories and voices of the region. Select members of West Writers Group present a special day of activations just for Due West! Join Georgia Mill, Grace Feng, Vanessa Giron and Achut Thuc for a range of writing activities in the recently- refurbished Footscray Community Arts Centre Café!


11am – 1.15pm ~ Georgia and Grace lead an activity on mapping space, documenting details about people and their surroundings.

1.15pm – 2pm ~ Georgia, Grace and Vanessa lead a tea sharing and writing workshop, reflecting on imagery around the theme of ‘home’. Grace will provide tea from her home town in Guangdong, China.

2.15pm – 3pm ~ Writing Session: Vanessa and Achut lead a conversation around how changing environments and shifts in routines impact on writing.

3pm – 4pm ~ Grace and Achut perform and share their own works and works by their favourite writers.

Waterside Metal Art Studio

Footscray locals, Waterside Metal Art Studio (Waterside), are an artist blacksmith studio offering blacksmithing courses, quality forging supplies and tools, blacksmiths coke and a space where members can forge.

As part of Due West Arts Festival, Waterside will be hosting two back-to-back intro sessions for people who are keen to learn more about the art of blacksmithing.

Saturday 16 November – Taster Session

The Taster Session provides a short induction and a supervised opportunity to forge something new from mild steel. Make something you’ll be proud of and have fun in the process!

Sunday 17 November – Youth Session

In addition to the Taster Session, Waterside will be hosting 2 introductory sessions for young people to learn how to manipulate hot steel and create something unique.

Robbie Alderson, the youngest tutor at Waterside, will be leading the class with the support of Waterside staff. Robbie started at Waterside quite a few years ago and has taken to blacksmithing like a fish to water. He has worked with Pete Matilla in Tasmania, joined the International Team at the 2019 Blacksmiths Festival and is part of Waterside’s regular teaching crew.

Make Everything an Instrument

Saturday 23 November – Kids Session

Learn how to make a plant think it’s a synthesizer, a fruit bowl think it’s a sampler, or just how to make Play-doh even more fun (by adding music).

This Sound School workshop, facilitated by Bridget Chappell, will lead you into the world of MakeyMakeys, the electronic toy that enables you to turn just about anything into a keyboard or MIDI controller.

No prior musical or technical knowledge required.
